Planning Your Stucco Project: What You Need to Know

So, you're thinking about a stucco project for your home here in Los Angeles. Great! It's a big investment, and getting it right means doing a little homework upfront. I've seen countless projects over the years, and the ones that go smoothly always start with solid planning. Let's talk about what you should expect and how to get ready.

Setting Your Stucco Project Timeline

One of the first things homeowners ask me is, “How long is this going to take?” That's a fair question, but there's no single answer. A small patch job or just one wall might take a few days. But a full re-stucco on a two-story house? You're probably looking at anywhere from two to four weeks, sometimes more, depending on the size, how complex the job is, and what the existing conditions are. This doesn't even count the time it takes to get bids and pick a contractor, which can easily add another few weeks.

Here's a rough breakdown of what to factor in:

  • Initial Consultations & Bids: Give yourself 1-3 weeks to meet with a few contractors and get detailed proposals. Don't try to rush this step.
  • Contract Signing & Scheduling: Once you've chosen someone, it might be another 1-4 weeks before they can actually start work. This depends on their current workload and if materials are readily available. Good contractors often have a full schedule.
  • Permits (if needed): For bigger jobs or structural changes, you'll need permits from the city. This can add several weeks, maybe even a month or more, to your timeline. Your contractor should handle this, but it's good to be aware.
  • Actual Work On-Site: As I said, 2-4 weeks is common for a full exterior. This includes prep, lath, the scratch coat, brown coat, and the final finish coat. Each layer needs time to cure properly, especially with our dry LA climate. You just can't rush that.
  • Cleanup & Final Walk-Through: A few days to make sure everything's tidy and you're happy with the results.

Factor in potential weather delays too. Even in LA, we get those unexpected rain showers, especially in winter and spring, which can push things back a day or two per incident.

What to Expect During the Process

When the crew shows up, your home is going to become a construction zone for a bit. It's just the nature of the beast. Here's what you'll likely see:

  • Protection: We'll cover windows, doors, plants, and anything else near the work area with plastic sheeting or tarps. Stucco dust and splatter really do get everywhere if you're not careful.
  • Demolition/Prep: If it's a re-stucco, we might chip off old stucco. This is noisy and dusty. For new stucco, it's about getting the surface ready – cleaning, patching, and making sure there's a solid base.
  • Lath Installation: Metal lath (like chicken wire, but stronger) gets stapled or nailed to your walls. This gives the stucco something to grab onto.
  • Scratch Coat: The first layer of stucco goes on,
